This was revealed in a Focus Group\nDiscussion related to technical guidance and sweet potato development that was\nheld at the Padjadjaran Science and Technology Building, Jatinangor, Tuesday\n(24\/9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unpad sweet potato research team itself\nhad produced new preeminent varieties of sweet potato that have received a\ncertificate of registration of varieties with the names \u201cBiang\u201d and \u201cMancrang\u201d.\nThe Biang variety is believed to have high anthocyanin and sweetness,\nmeanwhile, the Mencrang variety has high beta-carotene and sweetness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThese varieties are currently in the\nprocess of multilocation testing in sweet potato central production, which is\nin Sumedang, Garut, and Bandung Regency,\u201d said sweet potato researcher of Unpad\nFaculty of Agriculture Dr. Agung Karuniawan in a release received by Office of\nPublic Communication Unpad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The FGD was opened by Vice-Rector for\nResearch, Community Engagement, Cooperation, and Academic Corporate Unpad Dr.\nKeri Lestari, S.Si., M.Si., Apt. In her opening speech, Dr. Keri was very\nsupportive of the sweet potato development. She was also encouraged the\ngovernment, academics, and the community to use Padjadjaran Science and\nTechnology Area as a medium for collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event was attended by the Head of\nFood Crops Division of the Bandung Regency Agriculture Office, representatives\nof the West Java Province Food Crops and Horticulture Office, West Java Province\nFood and Horticultural Seed Development and Certification Center (BPSBTPH),\nHead of the West Java Province Agricultural Technology Assessment Center (BPTP)\n, RISPRO LPDP DRPMI Unpad Team, Unpad Faculty of Agriculture Dean, Unpad\nPostgraduate School Dean, Unpad Sweet Potato Researcher Teaching Team, Oorange\nTeam (Unpad Business Incubator), PT. Bimandiri Agro Sedaya, as well as sweet\npotato farmers in Bandung Regency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event discussed preeminent varieties\nthat are adaptive and have economic value in Bandung Regency, information from\nbusiness actors, and plans for the follow-up and transfer of Unpad research\ntechnology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Head of Food Crops Division\nof the Bandung Regency Agriculture Office Ir. Ina Dewi Kania, MP., the\npotential for developing sweet potatoes in Bandung Regency was still very wide\nopen. The main problems in the development of sweet potatoes in Bandung Regency\ninclude the absence of suitable land mapping planting or sites, average\nproductivity decreases, plant pest organisms, cultivation technologies and\nmaintenance that still do not meet\noperational standard procedures, and seed sources that are still difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The development of local varieties in\nBandung Regency is expected to improve the welfare of farmers.*<\/p>\n\n\n\n
