[unpad.ac.id, 13\/9\/2019] Three students from the Universitas Padjadjaran Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science won first place in the \u201cButterfly Race\u201d, a competition held by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia<\/em> \u2013 LIPI) at Bogor Botanic Gardens, Sunday (8\/9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three students were Afifah Agni, Sarah Mutiara Rahma, and Yulia\nMustika Sari. They participated in the butterfly identification competition\nwhich was held as part of the Bogor Zoology Museum\u2019s 125-year anniversary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn short, there are two main activities in the competition, which were\nobservation and identification of butterfly images,\u201d said Yulia when contacted\nby Office of Public Communication, Thursday (12\/9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the field observation, participants were asked to observe and\nidentify butterflies directly in Bogor Botanic Gardens. The scoring was based\nupon notes and sketches made by participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next activity was the butterfly images identification quiz.\nParticipants were asked to identify 25 butterfly images in 25 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The participants in the competition consisted of both students and the\ngeneral public. The butterfly identification had to be done without books or\nany other kind of guide materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afifah, Sarah, and Yulia said that their reason for participating in the\ncompetition was to gain more experience and knowledge. The three considered the\nbutterfly identification competition that was rarely held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt first we were surprised. We did not expect to win since we had many\ncompetitors from different backgrounds, there were competitors from the\nbutterfly lover community who were butterfly experts, there were also students\nfrom other universities. Thus, we are grateful that what we\u2019ve done was not\ndone in vain,\u201d said Afifah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afifah, Sarah, and Yulia also hoped\nfor more people to be interested in research about insects, because insects\nplay important roles in the ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBesides that, hopefully, there will\nmore events about insects held,\u201d hoped Yulia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
