In addition, participants are also interviewed
at different locations by moving places or rooms.

The MMI method was first developed by McMaster University
Medical School in 2001. This campus located in Ontario, Canada uses MMI to
select prospective students. It is believed that this method can more
accurately predict the in-class performance of students and to assess the
interpersonal abilities of participants.

The MMI method has been adopted globally by a number of
leading campuses throughout the world, especially for selecting prospective
students in the health sector.

“There were requests from several faculty deans that they
wanted to get more prospective students that are more suited to the study programs
that they were interested in,” said the Unpad Vice Rector for Academic and
Student Affairs, Dr. Arry Bainus, M.A.

Based on discussions with several deans, Dr. Arry believes
that one of the selection methods for getting the best candidates is by using MMI.

“Because the Independent Pathway selection process is under the
authority of respective university, hence the MMI method was chosen by Unpad,”
explained Dr. Arry.

To prepare faculty managers to implement MMI well, Unpad
held a training session titled “Introduction to the Implementation of Multiple
Mini Interviews” at the Unpad Training Center (UTC), Jalan Ir. H. Djuanda No.
4, Bandung, on Monday (1/7) and Tuesday (2/7).

In this training, Unpad invited Dr. Mohammad Nurman Yemen,
and Dr. Mohammad Arif Kamarudin, from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). UKM
itself has implemented MMI in the selection process of its prospective students
in the last three years.

“MMI is more objective and fair compared to panel
interviews,” said Dr. Nurman Yeman.

Furthermore, Nurman emphasized the fact that the outcome for
prospective students would be determined by many people, rather than based on
one or two interviewers.

“Participants who lack in one aspect of the interview can
increase their points in other aspects in the interview,” Arif Kamarudin said
about the superiority of MMI which allows candidates to test their abilities
from various aspects.

When interviewed during the event, Nurman and Arif
highlighted the most important challenge from MMI, namely resources.

“MMI takes a lot of time, requires a lot of energy, money,
people and infrastructure,” Nurman explained.

Nevertheless, MMI is believed to be a good method for
selecting the best of the best prospective students. There have been many
studies that show that students who pass the MMI process have more superior
characteristics compared to students who pass the traditional interview
process.

“What is more important is to familiarize the interviewers
with MMI guidelines so that the MMI can be done correctly,” Nurman concluded,
regarding the importance of preparing interview guides for MMI training in the
selection process for new Unpad students. *

Report by Syauqy Lukman / art
Translation by Shabrina Maharani

Instagram: @internationalofficeunpad
LikedIn : International Office Universitas Padjadjaran
Twitter : @upgrade_io
Facebook : Universitas Padjadjaran’s Global Relation and Advancements
Website : international.unpad.ac.id

[unpad.ac.id, 1/7/2019] New student admission selections through the Universitas Padjadjaran Independent Pathway for the regular Bachelor program for the 2019/2020 academic year will apply the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) method.
