Universitas Padjadjaran is currently ranked 751 – 800.

The QS WUR 2020 rankings methodology still considers a
number of indicators, including: academic reputation (40%), employer reputation
(10%), faculty/student ratio (20%), citations per faculty (20%), international
faculty (5%), and international students (5%).

Unpad received the highest points on the faculty/student
ratio indicator. For this indicator, Unpad was ranked 366 at the global level. The
points that must be strengthened from the 6 indicators mentioned above include
internationalization which includes academic and employer peer reviews which
are weighted more heavily. Additionally, the international faculty index and
international student index also need improvement (currently still ranked
601+).

The Head of Unpad International Office, Dr. Ronny, M.Kes.,
AIFO, PhD., explained that overall, Unpad’s cumulative achievements are not as
good as in 2018. As a result, this year, Unpad’s ranking has dropped compared
to last year.

The internationalization factor is affected by the change in
Unpad data on QS. The most affected criteria are the faculty ratio as well as
the number of foreign students, as fewer foreign students chose to continue
their studies at Unpad.

Ronny explained that Unpad continued to strengthen in terms
of data governance policies under the coordination of the Vice Rector for Planning,
Finance, and Information Systems. The efforts encourage communication networks
with international peers, namely partner universities, business communities and
other stakeholders. Additionally, action has been taken for the revival of cooperation
(MoU) with foreign institutions that were previously inactive or had no
activities, as well as the opening of the double degree program and
international classes for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs.

Regarding internationalization, the readiness of each study
program in welcoming foreign students will be very important, because each
study program will determine how many foreign students can be accommodated. On
the other hand, the presence of adequate infrastructure will also determine
Unpad’s ability to accept foreign students.

Currently, continued Ronny, Unpad’s internationalization
power can be seen in the ongoing Indonesian language learning program at BIPA. Cooperation
between Unpad and a number of institutions in Southeast Asia and other Asian
countries has also been going well. However, more massive efforts must continue
to be made.

“We have started to run faster. However, the other
universities are running even faster, so we need to be better and be more active
in preparing for university performance. One thing that must not be forgotten, is
that internationalization efforts must also be done without forgetting the
quality of education and the best service for domestic students, “said
Ronny.

Another opinion conveyed by Prof. Badri Munir Sukoco, SE.,
MBA., Ph.D, member of the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education
World Class University task force team, highlighted the importance of the
individual role of academics. In addition to the aspect of
internationalization, the role of individual reputation from University
academics to be able to improve academic reputation at the international level
is very important in boosting the University’s indicators of academic
reputation.

“Awareness is needed from the academic individuals at the
University about the importance of having a position that is recognized in the
international community in their respective fields of expertise,” explained
Badri.

An example given by Badri to illustrate this was if a
lecturer were to have a position as the head of a scientific association at the
international level, then this would contribute to the recognition of the
overall academic reputation of the institution. In addition, Badri also
explained the importance of several leading international standard programs
such as international conferences and collaborative research involving the
international academic community to improve academic reputation, one of the QS
WUR criteria.

Acting Unpad Rector Prof. Dr. Rina Indiastuti, M. SIE., appreciates
all members of the community who have contributed to Unpad’s achievements in
the QS WUR 2020 ranking. Although Unpad’s ranking has been adjusted, it is
still ranked among the top six universities in Indonesia. Rina also said that Unpad’s
increasing number of international publications that continues to increase serves
as a strong capital to increase the benefit and contribution of building the
nation as well as Unpad’s internationalization.

“The drop in Unpad’s ranking sends us a message reminding that
we have to work harder in building Unpad’s reputation and academic performance,
as done by other universities which are Unpad’s peers,” said Rina.

Rina also stated that the high score achieved by Unpad in
the faculty/student ratio indicator should bear fruit to determination to
ensure the excellence of graduates so they can be absorbed in to the working
world. This is further believed to bring confidence and increase the number of
Unpad partners at the domestic and international level.

“I, along with the vice rectors and deans, are planning to
strengthen the quality the study programs so they reach international
standards, collaborating with international partners. This can increase the
academic reputation of lecturers and students, which will directly attract
academics and international students to come to Unpad,” concluded Rina.

Report by Arief Maulana and Syauqy Lukman / mar
Translated by Shabrina Maharani

Instagram: @internationalofficeunpad
LikedIn : International Office Universitas Padjadjaran
Twitter : @upgrade_io
Facebook : Universitas Padjadjaran’s Global Relation and Advancements
Website : international.unpad.ac.id

[unpad.ac.id, 19/06/2019] The QS ranking agency has released the “QS World University Rankings (WUR) 2020” on Wednesday (19/6).
