Such is addressed by a professor from the Universitas\nPadjadjaran Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Hermawan Nagar Rasyid, dr., Sp.OT(K),\nM.T(BME), Ph.D., FICS, when he was giving a scientific oration titled \u201cA New\nConcept in Handling Chronic Bone Infection to Answer Orthopedic and\nTraumatology Problems in Indonesia\u201d in the Inauguration Ceremony and Scientific\nOration held in Grha Sanusi Harjadinata Unpad, Dipati Ukur street No. 35,\nBandung, Monday (29\/4).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prof. Hermawan said, chronic bone infection is a bone\ninfection that is chronic. In 1970, scientist Bucholz and Engelbrecht\nintroduced the use of antibiotic mixture to the bone cement as a prophylactic\nact to the bone infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSince then, various research has been done around the\nworld, whether in vitro, in vivo, and clinical, to increase the use of\nantibiotic beads in solving the infection in musculoskeletal field,\u201d spoke\nProf. Hermawan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He explained, optimal management of chronic infection often\nneeds a combination between surgery and antibiotics. But, osteomyelitis is\ndifficult to treat with conventional therapy. The incorrect use of antibiotics\nmay have a toxic effect and cause various infections because of certain\nresistance to specific antibiotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis causes an increase in cost and duration of patient\ncare. The increase of treatment cost causes the people in the lower class to\nhave difficulty getting modern treatment in the hospital,\u201d he spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his research, Prof. Hermawan surveyed how orthopedic\nspecialists make antibiotic beads for osteomyelitis cases. The result, every\northopedic specialist has a different shape and size of bead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe writer concluded that beads made manually has different\nshapes and sizes, has little porosity on its surface, has suboptimal ratio\nbetween volume and surface area, and a not uniform antibiotic content,\u201d he\nexplained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From his research, Prof. Hermawan developed a new concept in\nmaking antibiotic beads in the form of beads template system which could be\neasily operated and could make beads of uniform shape and diameter. This\ntemplate is expected to be used by orthopedic specialists in Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
