In turn, this can give birth to a
generation of millennials who are ready to face the era of disruption,” said Prof.
Dr. Tono Djuwantono, dr., Sp.OG (K),
M.Kes, Professor from the Unpad Faculty of Medicine.

Prof. Tono conveyed this in the Scientific Oration concerning
the Acceptance of the Professorship in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Faculty
of Medicine, Universitas Padjadjaran at Graha Sanusi, Hardjadinata Unpad, Jalan Dipati Ukur No. 35, Bandung, Monday (29/4).

The scientific oration presented was titled “The Role
of Fertility in Determining the Direction of Precision Medicine and Giving
Birth to the Nation’s Leading Generation”.

Prof. Tono said, in the 4.0 industrial revolution, the field
of medical science has to prove its adaptability in at least three sectors; big data, biotechnology, and
medical information and communication technology (medical ICT).

“Inevitably, the medical field needs to anticipate the rapid
advancement of technology. The existing technology must be utilized as
optimally as possible to produce appropriate or precise treatment procedures,” said
Prof. Tono.

According to him, the integration of assisted reproductive
technology and the advancement of genetic science has the potential to become a
starting point for a disease-free world for everyone. This means that the
treatment for each patient will be very specific and specifically designed for
the patient concerned.

This specific method of diagnosis and treatment is called
personalized medicine, which will be a mode of diagnosis and therapy in the era
to come.

In the field of genetics and birth defects, Prof. Tono
explained that the development of DNA sequence identification techniques has
increased researchers’ ability to reveal the exact genetical causes of birth
defects.

He said that these techniques can prevent the emergence of
congenital diseases in infants that might be conceived – both diseases derived
from parents and mutations of genes that arise by themselves.

On this occasion, Prof. Tono also explained that the rapid
development in the field of genetics and molecular biology in the last few
decades made it possible to carry out embryonic manipulation. Since the success
of Thomson et al. in developing human embryonic stem cells in a laboratory in
1998, the potential of embryonic stem cells to be developed into medical
therapy for patients suffering from degenerative diseases in the future is
becoming increasingly evident.

Prof. Tono and his team conducted research on stem cells
from umbilical cord blood. He explained that hematopoietic stem cells are seen
as a potential therapy for currently incurable blood and immune system
disorders.

Some time ago, Prof. Tono and his team have also succeeded
in developing a rapid cooling storage method for umbilical cord blood that is
proven to be able to maintain the viability of the hematopoietic stem cells
contained in it.

“This is a contribution from assisted reproductive
technology practitioners for the development of science which is expected to be
immediately implemented in the interest of health services for patients,
especially for the development of umbilical cord blood banks in the future,”
said Prof. Tono.*

Reported by Artanti Hendriyana / am | Translated by Shabrina Maharani

Instagram : @internationalofficeunpad
LinkedIn: International Office Universitas Padjadjaran
Twitter : @upgrade_io
Facebook : Universitas Padjadjaran’s Global Relation and Advancements
Website : international.unpad.ac.id

[unpad.ac.id, 29/04/2019] The rapid development of technology today has brought challenges and hopes for the field of medicine, particularly in obstetrics and gynecology, in giving birth to the nation’s leading generation.
