Seluasa orange, a\ntype of tangerine, was expected to become a leading local commodity from Tanimbar.\nHowever, this expectation is not in line with conditions in the field.\nFluctuating productivity and declining quality of oranges are a number of\nproblems faced by farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At present, the\nTanimbar District Government is focusing on developing oranges in two\nsub-districts, namely Fordata Island or the place where the oranges name\noriginally came from, and Wermaktian. Both of these locations have a height of\nabout 400 m above sea level and are suitable for citrus cultivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Facilitated by the\nVillage Community Empowerment Office and Fordata Island Subdistrict, Tanimbar,\nMaluku Corner conducted counseling while at the same time examining the problem\nof citrus production inhibitors. This extension has begun with the invitation\nof the orange farmers to the Unpad campus in November 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this activity,\nMaluku Corner invited comparative studies to tangerine cultivators in Lembang,\nIndramayu, and Garut. Furthermore, Maluku Corner has conducted a brief study on\nSentra Jeruk in Dewa Walerang, Fordata Subdistrict, last April 8-10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The study found\nthat there were two problems in the cultivation of citrus trees. The first\nproblem is the absence of grafting seeds. Oranges are planted using seeds that\ndo not guarantee optimal productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Another big\nproblem is that farmers only plant and not cultivate oranges. They do not yet\nknow that oranges need intensive care with specific cultivation technology\n“said Chairman of the Unpad Maluku Corner, Dr. Hinduism Reginawanti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Next, Dr. Regina\nand the team have coordinated with a number of parties who can take part in the\ndevelopment of this orange, including certified orange seed growers at Kairatu\nAmbon and Balitjertro Malang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The partners\ndecided that the proposed citrus development documents along with the road map\nshould be immediately drawn up and proposed to the Tanimbar Islands Regency\nGovernment and the Maluku Provincial Government. The hope is that the Seluasa\nOrange will begin to achieve optimal production in the next three years.*<\/p>\n\n\n\n
