[unpad.ac.id, 02/11/2020] Three Universitas Padjadjaran students won first place in the “Indonesia SDG Debate Competition 2020” which was held online by UNDP Indonesia from 14 to 28 October 2020. They are Giovanni Nickson Zefanya (Faculty of Communication Science), Annisaa Azalia Anindy (Faculty of Communication Science), and Indriana Rusmajie (Faculty of Social and Political Science).

“We are happy to represent Unpad, to be able to bring Unpad’s good name to the national level,” said Giovanni when contacted by the Unpad Public Communication Office (KKP), Sunday (01/11).

Before entering the final and winning the competition, the team first goes through several stages of selection. Starting from the regional selection on October 14th, the elimination selection at the national level from 21st to 22nd October, until the final on October 28th. All selection stages are held online.

In the final, the Unpad team competed with a team from the President University with a motion related to social assistance to citizens from the government amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which forms of assistance is better between cash transfer or pre-employment cards.

“We are in the opposition team. At that time, we argued about why pre-employment cards were better than direct cash transfers,” said Giovanni.

In this competition, in each round the participants were given a motion and it is  determined to each team whether they were on the Pro (In favor of) or Contra (Opposed to) side. The team was then given 30 minutes to discuss.

Being in three different locations, Giovanni, Annisaa, and Indriana were forced to hold discussions through a digital instant messaging application. However, the three of them were able to discuss and run the competition well.

After winning the UNDP Indonesia competition, Giovanni said he was happy and hoped that more Unpad students would make more achievements.

“Hopefully Unpad will achieve even more. [I also hope] more students will compete,” hoped Giovanni.

Apart from Giovanni’s team, Unpad also has another team consisting of three Faculty of Social and Political Science students, namely Haelvyn Pratagrahana Putra, Teja Kurniawan, and Christ Panogari. Haelvyn’s team went head-to-head against Giovanni’s team in the quarterfinal.(arm)*
