Unpad Central Lab Researchers Develop Hand Sanitizer, Potentially Effective Against Viruses and Bacteria

Unpad Central Laboratory Researchers have made an alternative hand sanitizer that contains a formula with potential. This formula makes the Unpad hand sanitizer more effective in killing virus, fungi, and bacteria.

This hand sanitizer product was developed by Prof. Dr. Unang Supratman, M.Si., and dr. Ronny Lesmana, M.Kes., AIFO, PhD. In formulation, the Unpad hand sanitizer contains 70% alcohol, water, hydrogen peroxide, glycerol, essential oils, and special disinfectants that are commonly used for activities in BSL-3 Laboratories.

Based on studies, this disinfectant formula is effective in killing the Herpes Simplex virus, Poliovirus Type 2, to Bacteriophage T2 and Herpes Simplex Type 1 virus.

The addition of herbal essential oils also has a double function. Besides releasing a fragrance, it also increases the ability of hand sanitizer in killing the viruses. In this case, the essential oil product used was extracted from oranges.
