[unpad.ac.id, 05/03/2021] The QS ranking institution has once again released the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021 on Thursday (04/03) at local time. This year, a total of 23 Unpad fields of science were included in the list that was assessed by QS.
The Head of the Unpad International Office, Ronny, dr., M.Kes., AIFO, Ph.D., explained that there were more fields of science included in the assessment compared to last year. In 2020, there were thirteen fields of Unpad that got assessed by QS.
“This is one of the positive indications that there were performance improvements illustrated through the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021,” Ronny stated.
This year, a total of ten fields were added to the assessment: natural science, chemistry, geology, geophysics, development studies, education, law, dentistry, life sciences and medicines, and finally computer science and information systems.
As Ronny explained, there were four assessment parameters in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. The four parameters were academic reputation, staff reputation, h-index, and the number of citations. Between the social sciences and natural sciences, the parameters had different percentages.
One of the points in which Unpad excelled can be seen in the score performance of the sciences that were assessed. The assessment performance in the social sciences has increased. “The increase may not seem significant, but we can see good progress towards improvement,” Ronny said.
From the 23 sciences that were assessed, medicines once again entered the rankings. This year, the medicines field was on the 600-650th rank globally and occupied 4th place on the national ranking.
Ronny explained that this rank was a decline from last year, in which medicines entered the 550-600th rank and occupied 3rd place on the national ranking. As Ronny stated, several factors contributed to the decline in rank.
Globally, there was a general decline in ranking, one of the causes being the academic reputation parameter. This was also a factor in the decline of the Unpad medicine ranking.
Other than that, Ronny said that it is because the field of life sciences and medicine has only entered the assessment this year. “This could have caused a split in the “votes” on the general field of medicine, affecting the ranking,” he added.
Ronny further explained that the QS World University Rankings by Subject is a reflection of the performance of each field of science. An increase in performance is not merely in pursuit of better accreditation. However, the scientific fields must also seek independent recognition on the international level.
“Ideally, we would be able to measure what Unpad has, with solid parameters for comparison,” Ronny stated.*
