[unpad.ac.id, 18/04/2019] Universitas Padjadjaran has been chosen as a member of the International Research Consortium “Research Innovation and Staff Exchange for Social Media Analytics (RISE_SMA) for Society and Crisis Communication” for the 2019-2022 period. This project has received funding from the European Union’s HORIZON 2020 research and innovation program under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 823866.
In the consortium, Unpad was chosen as the representative of a developing country. The RISE_SMA research projects aims to form an interdisciplinary, international network involving scholars and practitioners in the field of social media to provide practical benefits and recommendations to the public and policy makers.
The RISE_SMA Consortium is headed by Prof. Dr. Stefan Stieglitz from the University of Duisburg-Essen. The RISE_SMA research project was officially started at the kickoff meeting held at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Gerhard-Mercartor-Haus (LR) in Duisburg, Germany, from April 15-16.
The kickoff meeting was attended by representatives of all the consortium members. From Unpad, the meeting was attended by the coordinator of RISE_SMA Unpad, a professor and Head of the Center for Ethnoscience Studies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Prof. Dr. Budi Nurani Ruchjana.
During this meeting, discussions were held regarding the RISE_SMA Consortium’s research plan for the next 4 years.
The RISE_SMA Unpad team consists of Prof. Budi Nurani Ruchjana, Dr. Atje Setiawan Abdullah, MS, M.Kom. Dr. Juli Rejito and Dr. Diah Chaerani. This team is part of the Academic Leadership Grant (ALG) group of FMIPA Unpad with the title “Development of Space Time Models and Their Applications to Industry, Organizations and the Environment to Support the Common Goals of West Java”.
The ALG program presents an explanation of the importance of information technology in maintaining culture in the era of globalization. The research is carried out through an Ethno-informatics approach and using Knowledge Discovery in Database methods in Data Mining.
The approach and methods are accompanied by a mathematical and statistical study of the model through a predictive analysis approach for time series phenomena, spatial phenomena, and spatio-temporal phenomena, which can describe real phenomena in the field in relation to how society attempts to overcome various communication crises.
The follow-up activity of the meeting is a one-month staff exchange program that RISE_SMA Unpad team is expected to take part in, along with academic activities in the form of topic development discussions according to the presented material.
In addition, the team will also visit the University of Duisburg-Essen and Leiden University, and conduct workshops in collaboration with the Virtimo industry in Berlin.
These activities are expected to culminate in prototype models built with supporting software, application of data in the field to the application of Social Media Analysis in describing and modeling communication crises that occur in the community.
The ultimate goal of this research consortium is to be able to provide benefits to the community through realizing the 11th Sustainable Development Goal (Sustainable Cities and Communities), as well as realizing Unpad’s research pillars, especially the pillars of Cultural Diversity and Social Harmonization.
Another target of the RISE_SMA Consortium for the Unpad Team is to become a forum for collaboration in the implementation of information technology-based international research to provide benefits to the community while realizing the Unpad-West Java Strategic Alliance Program (ASUP Jabar), which involves collaboration between Unpad and Regency/City governments in West Java province.
The participating institutions of the RISE_SMA Consortium are the University of Duisburg-Essen (Germany), Leiden University (the Netherlands), the University of Agder (Norway), the University of Sydney (Australia), Queensland University of Technology (Australia), Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (UNISINOS, Brazil), Universitas Padjadjaran (Indonesia), Virtimo AG (Germany), and the Municipality of Kristiansand (Norway).*
