[unpad.ac.id, 18/3/2019] Universitas Padjadjaran was entrusted by the Indonesian National Defense Institution (Lemhanas) Directorate of Ideology and Politics Assessment Deputy of Strategic Assessment to hold a focused group discussion (FGD) at the Unpad Campus Executive Lounge, Dipati Ukur street No. 35, Bandung, Thursday (14/3).
The topic of the FGD is “Overcoming Political Risk of Post-Truth to Keep the National Security Stability in the National Defense Framework”. A number of parties must properly respond the development of the post-truth phenomenon or the society’s condition that is easily influenced by false values.
Unpad rector, Prof. Tri Hanggono Achmad, said that in responding to this phenomenon, Indonesia must take part as a subject who contributes in solving the problem. Lest Indonesia be merely the object of resolution.
“The tsunami (big wave) of information that has become the post-truth catalyst, is a global issue. It’s reasonable that we must think of global solutions as well,” said the rector.
This phenomenon also comes to the attention of Lemhanas RI. A member of the Expert Assessor (Taji) in the Leadership Sector of Lemhanas RI, General Major of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Juwondo explained that the FGD is intended to offer suggestions or recommendations of strategic policy to the Governor of Lemhanas RI.
Furthermore, Taji in Socio-Cultural Sector Brigjen TNI Sugeng Santoso said, the post-truth phenomenon will develop further in the digital era. This phenomenon contributes a lot to the political process.
The success of Donald Trump in winning the US elections in 2016 is an example of post-truth success. “The post-truth phenomenon is developing further to the development of social media. Other than that, the sub-optimal political education and digital literacy to the public also contribute in developing post-truth,” spoke Sugeng.
The discussion moderated by Head of Public Communication Office, Syauqy Lukman, M.S.M., was attended by some Unpad leaders. Vice Rector of Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Arry Bainus M.A., who is also a political expert from Unpad’s Faculty of Social Science and Political Science explained, the post-truth phenomenon is not something new.
Even then, this phenomenon develops in an interactive way thanks to digital technology.
“This is a battle between reality and perception, where objectivity and rationality succumb to emotion,” he explained.
Society, said Dr. Arry, must improve their literacy. [Getting oneself] used to respond to information in social media is also needed. On the other side, regulation to limit hoax is also required.
Communication expert and Dean of Unpad’s Faculty of Communication Sciences Dr. Dadang Rahmat Hidayat agreed, the spread of post-truth is due to the imbalance of valid datum verified by the government.
The authorized institution must take part in delivering valid datum that have been verified through open publication.
Following the explanations from the speakers, the discussion session was continued with responses from Unpad experts, Dr. R. Widya Setiabudi Sumadinata, S.Si., S.I.P., M.T., M.Han from the political perspective, Prof. Dr. Hj. Hendriati Agustina, M.Si., and Aulia Inskandarsyah, Ph.D. from the psychological perspective, and R. Achmad Gusman Catur Siswandi, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D from the law perspective.
The collective thoughts from academicians will be reference for the Lemhanas RI team to formulate a strategic policy on the post-truth phenomena.
“Before, we’ve done discussions with different speakers, but this is the first time for us to involve academicians. We verily expect that Lemhanas RI can continue its partnership with Unpad in assessing other strategic issues,” stated Juwondo.
